About us

  • First Baptist Church in Leavenworth traces its roots to 1858. The church merged with another Baptist church in 1864, and was located in downtown Leavenworth until 1957 when it moved to its present location at 13th and Osage Streets.
  • The church is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches of the USA (formerly the Northern Baptist Convention). Our convention is comprised of approximately 6,000 churches with 1.2 millions members.
  • The church is also affiliated with the American Baptist Churches of the Central Region (formerly the Kansas Baptist Convention).
  • The church is evangelical in nature. We believe in the historic, biblical Christian faith. We seek to be true to the Holy Scriptures in our faith and practice and to boldly proclaim the Good News of Salvation through Jesus Christ.
  • The church is cooperative in nature. We seek to cooperate with other Christian organizations in carrying out the Great Commission of our Lord to make disciples.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We believe the Holy Bible is God's infallible Word, written by men who were divinely and uniquely inspired, and that it is our supreme and final authority in all matters of faith and practice.

We Believe in the Holy Trinity.  In God the Father, creator of heaven and earth, perfect in holiness, infinite in wisdom and measureless in power.  We rejoice that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer,  and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.

We Believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, born of a virgin, sinless in life, who atoned for the sins of the world by His death on the cross.  We believe in His bodily resurrection, His ascension into heaven, His high priestly   intercession for His people, and His personal, visible return to the earth in power and glory.

We Believe in the Holy Spirit who came forth from God to convict the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, comfort and seal forever those who believe in Jesus Christ.

We Believe that all men are sinners by nature and by choice, but that "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).  We believe therefore, that those who accept Christ as Lord and Saviour shall be forever in God's presence in heaven, and that those who reject Christ as Lord and Saviour will forever be separated from God in a place called hell.

We Believe that the local church is composed of regenerated (born-again), immersed believers in Christ, voluntarily united together for the purpose of worshipping God, having fellowship with other believers, and boldly proclaiming the Gospel of Christ throughout the whole world.

We use the 1833 "New Hampshire Confession of Faith" as a commentary on the basic Bible doctrines that we hold dear.  You can get a copy by contacting the church office.

wHAT WE DO

The Ministries of First Baptist Church can be categorized under five headings:

WORSHIP

Each week we seek to have an encounter with God that strengthens our faith and deepens our commitment of service to Him.  We define worship as: "The occupation of the heart with God Himself."

DISCIPLESHIP

We strive to help people grow in their knowledge of the Scriptures, of church history, of Christian doctrine, and of practical ways to live out the Christian faith.  To become more Christlike.

FELLOWSHIP

Every Christian is a part of God's family.  Therefore, each and every Christian needs to be part of a local church.  The local church is where the family meets to interact together, to grow close to each other and learn to serve the Lord, each other, our community, and reach out to the World.

MINISTRY

We want to express our Christian love to each other and to our community by helping to meet the social needs as well as the spiritual needs of people.

MISSIONS

It is our aim to reach as many people as possible with the Gospel of our Lord. Our mission program begins at home and reaches around the world.  We endeavor to teach Christians how to share their faith in a non-threatening matter. We believe every Christian is a witness for Christ; therefore, we seek to be the very best possible.
